If you love aged Lopez de Heredia whites, this wine has your name on it. Ever try a Bairrada white? It’s a very cool maritime climate that holds some rare varieties, including Baga for red wine and Bical for whites. Luis Pato is one of the masters of this region, who showed the world these wines can excel and compete on a world stage. Bical is an incredibly unique grape that’s mind-bending, as it’s at once oily or waxy and almost petrol, but then insanely dry and racy like fresh squeezed lemon juice. Think of this as a baby version of the 1991 Bairrada we sell as well. Mostly Bical, with Cercial and Sercialinho in the field blend as well. All from old vines in that cold, maritime wonderland that is Bairrada. Yet another study in contrasts: citrusy and creamy; tropical and full but lean; maritime and dry, but rich and at moments oily. We should all be laying these wines down and aging them, as by day two, this bottle swaps its melon-y, round fruit for an intense, elegant mineral finish. Yes, that’s right, ageworthy white for $24.
