It seems like every week there is new story about the impending Bourbon shortage, which hits home each time we go to re-stock one of our favorites. We’re always on the hunt to fill the void with something we can stand behind, but we’ve found that new Bourbon can be a notion to be wary of these days. Many producers and suppliers are scrambling to push out second-rate juice with faux-artisan backstories, frequently murky sourcing and non-existent age statements simply to get something with quantity out to the market. When Nicolas Palazzi of PM Spirits came out with his own Bourbon release at the end of last year, we knew we’d be encountering something different. PM has become an essential source for us on the spirits front, and we’ve been drawn to their portfolio as much for the purity and quality of their offerings as the transparency of detail on each of their products. We are obsessed with place and detail on the wines we carry, so why shouldn’t it be the same for spirits?

Mic Drop Straight Bourbon Whiskey marks PM’s first foray into a custom domestic bottling. Don’t let the playful comic label fool you - this is dead serious stuff. As is clearly noted on the bottle, this is 8-year-old, barrel proof whiskey sourced from MGP Distillery in Indiana and bottled in Bardstown, Kentucky. This unadulterated whiskey drinks as if it were much older, revealing dark, rich and savory layers. It shows ample sweetness buttressed neatly by rye spice with a finish that goes on and on. Mic Drop is as compelling and clearly presented as any Bourbon we’ve encountered, and though it’s hardly a cheap tipple, its $100 price tag is comfortably merited given its all-too-visible quality. This is a one-off release of less than 3,400 bottles and PM sold through their last remaining stock yesterday. You’ll want to get in on the fun before word gets out any more than it has already on this delicious insider gem.

"This 8-year-old bourbon was distilled in 2009 at MGP from a mash bill of 75 percent corn, 21 percent rye, and 4 percent malted barley. It was bottled at cask strength (112 proof) and tastes of vanilla, fruit leather, and burnt marshmallow. The bourbon distinguishes itself by its age—it’s much more interesting than the younger 2- to 3-year-old whiskeys from MGP that other brands bottle and sell. Those whiskeys aren’t bad, but the character of the liquid doesn’t really start to develop until about 6 years in.

You won’t be seeing Mic.Drop. again—it is one of those singular releases made possible by a central whiskey warehouse such as MGP. Only 20 casks were available for bottling. So when the 3,358 bottles are gone, the whiskey will have left this mortal coil for good—but it will have made some noise on the way."
