In the vines, via Domaine Simon Bize.
What’s the appeal of a bottle of Bourgogne or Villages wine from a great producer? First, it has to be said: price. By the nature of Burgundian classification, in almost all cases a Bourgogne or Villages bottle is going to be more affordable than their 1er or Grand Cru. It’s a way to experience this special region without emptying your wallet. Second, Bourgogne & Villages bottlings are for us essential snapshots of different producers. This is important for a few reasons. You can’t perfectly compare & contrast one producer’s Bourgogne/Villages to another’s the same way you could a 1er Cru or Grand Cru because the source of the grapes used to create them is rarely as precisely indicated, and is often a proprietary blend determined by the specific domaine’s holdings or preferences. Wines at the Bourgogne/Villages level should begin to give some insight into an individual producer’s chosen style, though. Additionally, if a producer can create something transcendent on this level, and if they clearly give enough of a damn to do so, it’s a pretty clear indicator of their talent. It also shows respect for their craft, and, frankly, a respect for all of their customers. If you have the means and the inclination to move higher up the classification food chain, you’ll likely find that the producers making superlative Bourgogne/Villages wines are going to reward you accordingly, and handsomely, for doing so.

The well-established rise in Burgundy prices is undeniable at this point, and can be a tough pill to swallow for those of us who have long obsessed over this region. If there is a silver lining to this rise, though, it’s that the quality of the more ‘basic’ wines has exploded as well. These are the calling card wines for Burgundy, and the examples below from many of our favorite producers are especially eye-catching. Whether you’re a novice excited to start your Burgundy journey or a seasoned explorer hoping to round out your collection, there is so much to love in this group that we've put together today.
