As we’re catching our breath after the holiday season, we thought it would be helpful to send out a recap of our 2017 Burgundy stocks. Today we’ll focus on the reds, ranging from some of the region’s most sought-after producers (Dujac, Fourrier, Roumier, Liger-Belair etc.) to some our favorite insider gems, across many different appellations and prices.

The sheer deliciousness of the best 2017s has never been in doubt. As the wines continue to take shape in bottle, they have begun to show more than just charm, although they still possess it in spades. On the red side, the most compelling examples show a combination of well-defined ripe fruit, increasingly precise terroir expression and effortless balance. The best reds are already strikingly aromatic and equal parts sappy & snappy on the palate. It’s always tough to assign a direct comparison with past vintages, but we’ve heard ’17 reds favorably mentioned by both critics and producers in the same breath as some of our most cherished over the years – 2010, 2007, 2005 and even 1985. The intensity of ‘10, the delight of ‘07, the complexity of ‘05 without the hulking structure, and the suave fruit of ’85. Certainly high praise, and we’re confident the best wines will merit every bit of it as they continue to develop.

The extremely high quality of the vintage itself is plenty of motivation to dive in headfirst to these delicious wines. The uncertainty of potential future tariffs on European wine, in addition to the ones that have already gone into effect since late 2019, help make a further case for loading up. We’ll continue to do so ourselves while we can and are pleased to share the wide selection below today.
