Dominik at the shop last week tasting us on his latest & greatest.

We’ve been following the career of Dominik Huber for quite some time, even before we started writing about his remarkable wines back in 2016. His graceful interpretations of Catalonian terroir grabbed our attention from our very first encounter, and his wines remain some of the most exciting being produced in Spain today. This Friday, February 7th, from 5:30–7:30PM, we will explore each of his current 3 projects during a special tasting – Terroir Sense Fronteres in Montsant, Terroir Historic - organically farmed purchased fruit in Priorat - and Terroir al Limit – estate fruit in Priorat. He talks often of ‘infusions rather than extractions’ and that mantra is evident in all the wines we’ll be opening.

The trailblazing Terroir al Limit winery in Priorat, which he originally founded with renowned South African winemaker Eben Sadie, is making terroir-driven, nuanced wines that are far removed from the inky, opulent specimens this region can often be associated with. Dominik followed that with his Terroir Historic Priorat project, where he works closely in the vineyard with local Priorat farmers. His mentorship has helped them convert to organic farming, motivating the next generation of growers to continue working their families’ vineyards and, most importantly, have an economically sustainable way to do so.

Looser appellation rules in the surrounding Montsant DO provided Dominik with the blank slate to make wines his way - without any minimum alcohol requirements - and it was here that Terroir Sense Fronteres was born. Harmony between food and wine is also one of Dominik’s key tenets, and he believes these lifted, restrained Monstant wines are especially compatible with the traditional Mediterranean style cuisine. Their bright, energetic personalities make them especially versatile at the table. Geographically speaking, Montsant wholly surrounds Priorat (or as Dominik explains – “Priorat is the donut hole of Montsant’s donut”). As such, some Montsant vineyards have much more in common with their neighboring Priorat vineyards than other vineyards in Montsant. Dominik has worked tirelessly to uncover some of the most compelling sources in the area, and since the land is not as renowned (read: expensive), the price of the wines he is producing here is almost shocking given their intrigue and sheer deliciousness.

We will taste:

2017 Terroir Historic Priorat Blanc
2018 Terroir Sense Fronteres Brisat de Montsant
2018 Terroir Sense Fronteres Negre de Montsant
2018 Terrior Sense Fronteres Vertebra de la Figuera de Montsant
2016 Terroir al Limit Priorat Torroja Vi de Vila

You can find more info on each of these wines here. The tasting is free of charge, and feel free to swing by anytime, but please sign up on our site here if you plan to attend. Hope to see you there!

Cheers,
