10 Insider Burgs. Great for drinking now.

We recently discovered the wines of Trediberri in Barolo and were impressed by how open and delicious they were for young Barolo without sacrificing nuance or complexity. The project only began a few years ago with the first release in 2011 but there is clearly confidence and expertise at this young winery. Trediberri was started by Federico Oberto, his son Nicola, along with his friend Valdimiro Rambaldi in the hamlet of Berri in La Morra – three (tre) from (di) Berri. Frederico spent most of his career working at the Renato Ratti winery in La Morra, including almost two decades under Renato himself. This is not a team that is attempting to be ‘modern’ or ‘traditional,’ rather they are attempting to make the most balanced and drinkable wines they can, and we have to say they hit the nail on the head.

Berri is located in the hills in the western corner of La Morra facing south-west just below the Serradenari zone. This area is a high ridge line on the far edge of the appellation that clearly is yielding high toned, sometimes racy Barolo’s that have captured our attention. The elevation of the vines here seems to tame the warmth of the seasons like 2015 which combined with a careful hand in the cellar created some of our favorite wines of the vintage.

While there is no set recipe in the cellar, the team at Trediberri favors less extraction and shorter macerations in concrete with around 2 years of aging in large Botti. Farming is organic in the vineyard and native yeasts are utilized in the cellar to allow the wines to evolve more naturally. The Trediberri Barolo is sourced mostly from Berri with around 20% of the fruit coming from Capalot on the other side of the village of La Morra. What they captured in the bottle is classic La Morra, fragrant with violets, spices, and cherries with very delicate color and restrained tannins. They also have a parcel of vines in the legendary cru of Rocche dell’Annuziata that yielded a beautiful wine in 2015 with more depth, sanguine fruit, and musky florals. If the recent releases from Trediberri are any guide at all, this is a winery to watch in Barolo.
