Pedro Parra y Familia - País, Itata Valley, Vinista 2018 (750ml) - $15.99

Pedro Parra’s Vinista is made of 100% País, light in body with soft tannins, refreshing acidity, and notes of wild berries, dried herbs, forest floor, and a hint of bay spice on the finish. We are always searching for incredible wines from old vine material, and this is arguably one of the best wines around 15 bucks that we have ever tasted. Find a porch to pound it on, because this wine should come with a straw.

Pedro Parra has become a household name in the wine world, and is an integral part of Chile’s wine renaissance. Parra is known as “Dr. Terroir”, because he holds a PhD in terroir viticoles from the Paris Center of Agriculture and spent years working with some of France’s best wineries – including world-class Burgundy producers Louis Michel Liger-Belair and Domaine Roulot – as well as wineries in Italy, Spain, USA, Canada, and Argentina. Five years ago Parra returned to his hometown of Concepción, Chile, near Itata - a small, remote wine region in the Bio Bio wine region of Southern Chile. Bio Bio and Itata have spent years relatively isolated, and disconnected from the modernization that transformed the rest of the Chilean wine industry. The vineyards of Itata lie on granitic mountains near the coast, located 500km South of Santiago. Steep slopes, a lack of proper roads, and forests have made the region notoriously difficult to visit, but has also created a time capsule of Chilean viticulture.

As Pedro Parra famously says, "You can't grow terroir," and with this project, he has proven that great wines are made from the ground up. Parra works exclusively with Cinsault and País, a red grape variety that has a long history in South America, originally planted by Spanish Conquistadors dating back to the 17th century. For this cuvée, Parra has hunted down old head-trained País vineyards ranging in age from 60 – 120 years old. Combined with organic farming, hand harvesting, and minimal intervention in the winery, Parra has created a new class of Chilean wine that is taking the industry by storm. This wine is a culmination of rich history, meticulous farming, thoughtful winemaking, and available at an incredible price. Load up!
