Menetou-Salon is a small appellation 30 kilometers southwest of the larger, older, and far more commercially successful commune of Sancerre. Paul-Henry Pelle is a thoughtful producer who shows that the top sites here, with the right amount of care, can produce Sauvignon Blanc of a quality that rivals upper tier Sancerre without the matching price tag. Pelle is based in the village of Morogues which has an unusually high concentration of Kimmeridgian marl, the soil that helps to define not only the best sites in Sancerre but also Chablis in Burgundy and the Aube in Champagne. The quality of the terroir is captured by Domaine Pelle’s careful organic farming and patient wine making, rarities in areas like Sancerre where demand out paces supply. The single vineyard cuvees offered here are fermented largely in Foudre and old 400-liter barrels where they rest for 12 months before bottling allowing the wines to mature slowly in the family’s 13th century cellars. Far from simply refreshing wines, everything from Domaine Pelle stands out as a statement for the extremely high quality Menetou-Salon is capable of; any lover of Sancerre owes it to themselves to try these exemplary wines.
