Fernando García and Daniel Jiménez-Landi

Sierra de Gredos is a mountain range about 90 minutes west of Madrid that touches down in three appellations - Méntrida, Vinos de Madrid, and Cebreros - and has emerged as one of the most exciting regions in all of Spain (and in Europe as a whole). This is a very rugged, high-altitude territory dominated by sandy, granitic soils. Garnacha rules the roost here and historically, farmed grapes were headed for co-ops or bulk wine production. Flash forward to the present and you see a focus on reclaiming abandoned vineyards, often blessed with very old vines, and making terroir-driven wines in a natural way. Many producers here gravitate towards an ethereal, elegant style of Garnacha and you hear phrases such as “Pinot-like’ and ‘Burgundian-style’ sprinkled around for good reason. Even when alcohol levels start to creep up, the extreme elevation, nutrient-poor soils, and vast diurnal variation in temperature contribute to high acid levels and a prevailing sense of freshness. This is very different from the high-octane, extracted style that used to dominate the Spanish Garnacha scene. The Sierra de Gredos rightly sits alongside Châteauneuf du Pape and Priorat as sources for high quality, age-worthy Grenache. As we have seen so frequently in the past decade, there is a blossoming generation of winemakers in these off-the-radar wine regions who are turning back the clock to a more classic style, albeit with more precision than their predecessors.

Comando G, led by Daniel Jiménez-Landi and Fernando García, has become not only a standard bearer for the region, but is also one of the most exciting producers in Spain. Comando G is trying to redefine what Garnacha can be in terms of elegance and finesse. Today we are delighted to offer the 2018 Comando G Rozas 1er Cru. This cuvée is a blend of prime 50 - 60 year old Garnacha parcels in Vinos de Madrid appellation, all situated above 2,700 feet. This luminous wine radiates bright cherry fruit and red florals yet manages to be both ethereal and impactful in a way that cannot help but grab your attention. This is Grenache like most people have never seen, and one we encourage you to discover for yourself.
