Freshly Plowed Le Clos Guillot Vineyard

We are obsessed with fine wines and do not believe that you always need to spend a fortune to discover them. Bernard Baudry’s Cabernet Francs from Chinon are case in point. Their wines are astounding and frankly, hard to fathom in the context of the current, fine wine pricing world. We are guilty of drinking them young as they are delicious in their youth, but their true glory lies ahead in the cellar.  Today, we are thrilled to offer a nice quantity of ’18 Baudry – Chinon ‘Clos Guillot.’ We would never judge you for opening one tonight, but you could lay this down for a bit - pop in a few years (or 10) and then lose your mind drinking this wine knowing you only spent ~$35 bucks a bottle!  “Why didn’t I buy cases!?”

Founded by Bernard Baudry in 1980, the estate turns out immensely soulful wines from a collection of cherished sites in Chinon. There are many superlatives that would aptly apply here, but first and foremost, these are terroir-driven wines wrought through careful organic farming and straightforward winemaking.  There is no inoculation, temperature control, nor additives in the cellar or the vineyard; just natural fermentations and patient elevage carried out in well-worn wood. Le Clos Guillot is a single vineyard that was replanted by the Baudry family in the mid 1990’s for the first time since World War II. Perched above the village of Chinon facing south, Clos Guillot is a prime Cabernet Franc vineyard yielding elegant, long-lived wines from iron rich soil of clay and tuffeau.

The 2018 vintage of Le Clos Guillot is a wine of true pedigree by any definition. Extravagant aromatics of ripe blackberries and cassis mingle with pungent notes of violets, savory herbs, and subtle hints of baking spice. The palate features wild, brambly fruit and dark streaks of earth with just a hint of bay leaf. Structurally the wine is certainly quite youthful; a nervous acidity sits astride fiercely coiled tannins with pointed minerality which quiets down with after a few hours open.  The real magic is in how this wine will evolve; everything is so perfectly in balance with plenty of ripe fruit and focused acidity to carry the wine as it slowly resolves over the next 5 - 10 years. It should continue to drink beautifully for many years to come.

Whether drinking today or in the future, we are certain this wine will provide pleasure and make a keen addition to any collection. Just make sure that if you're going to drink it now to decant the wine for a few hours and enjoy it with some heartier fare. To sweeten the pot, we are offering a 10% discount on 6 bottles or more now through midnight, Sunday 3/7.  Add 6 bottles to your cart and the discount will automatically apply.

Domaine Bernard Baudry - 2018 Chinon Le Clos Guillot
24+ BOTTLES AVAILABLE
$38.99/BOTTLE
Bernard Baudry started this domaine in the 70's and pieced together an enviable collection of top parcels across the appellation. Balance is king at this property, and though the wines can be dense and powerful, these are also, as their NY importer points out, "precise, textured Chinon." This bottling comes from Le Clos Guillot, a vineyard planted between 1993-2000 on a parcel of land that had been abandoned since World War 2. Black fruits, spice, and violet floral notes dominate the nose, while on the palate the wine is quite full showcasing a characteristic lift and balance with tightly coiled tannins and veins of minerality. Considering the ripeness of the vintage, this wine is very young, and really starts to shine a few hours after opening; it is sure to blossom handsomely with sometime in the cellar if you're inclined to lay it down.
