Produttori del Barbaresco likely needs no introduction for anyone who drinks Nebbiolo, but we often feel compelled to remind people of the immense potential these wines offer at an outstanding price point. This over-performing cooperative cellar has been cranking out top tier Barbaresco since its first vintage in 1958 and continues to do so today. We’ve shared many memorable bottles of Produttori Barbaresco over the years and can report that wines from the 1980’s and 1990s are still drinking extremely well. Under the direction of Aldo Vacca the quality of the Produttori del Barbaresco wines has only improved in recent years as they continue to play a pivotal role in the region.

One of the keys to the quality of Produttori’s Barbaresco is the origin of the fruit that goes into the wine.  Even in years when the single vineyard cuvées are made, the normale bottling is largely comprised of fruit from legendary vineyards like Montestefano, Ovello, Pora, and Rio Sordo. While the prestige generally falls on single vineyard bottlings, blended Barbaresco is a time-honored tradition meant to combine characteristics of each site into a package that is more than the sum of its parts.  Beyond sourcing, winemaking here has remained traditional throughout the history of the winery with extended maceration on the skins and 3 years of elevage in large, well-worn botti. The simple truth is that this is excellent Barbaresco in a classic mold at an unbeatable price. It performs extremely well in the cellar generally blossoming with 10 - 15 years on it but always drinks right away with a good decant if you find you can’t wait to enjoy it.

Antonio Galloni - Vinous

The 2017 Barbaresco shows just how appealing this vintage can be. In 2017, the warm, dry growing season gave the Barbaresco an extra kick of richness that fills out its frame and adds so much immediacy. Sweet red berry fruit, cinnamon, rose petal and mint are open in the glass, but it is the wine’s seductive radiance that wins the day. Pora, Ovello, Montestefano, Muncagota and Rio Sordo are the main vineyards used for the straight Barbaresco. The 2017 is such an inviting and expressive wine. Don’t miss it!
