A shot of Guimaro's dramatic Ribeira Sacra Vineyards - Courtesy of Jose Pastor Selections

Few wines have risen from obscurity to international prominence as quickly as the Mencia based wines of Ribeira Sacra. This is far from an undeserved flash in the pan; Mencia is a noble variety that is not only wonderfully transparent of its terroir but also creates alluring wines that seamlessly marry freshness to tremendous depth of flavor. The dramatic slopes of Ribeira Sacra are some of the most difficult and treacherous to work in Europe but yield captivating Mencia of singular quality. Guimaro, helmed by Pedro Rodriguez and his family, has been one of the most influential properties championing this dynamic Spanish appellation since its creation in 1996. Guimaro has been in constant evolution ever since, embracing traditional techniques while also reducing yields and converting to organic farming. The 2018 vintage of Camino Real is the most successful we have ever seen from Guimaro, full stop! Camino Real is a profound expression of Mencia at an unbeatable price point. This is a perfect red wine for this time of year - it can be enjoyed as a cocktail red with a little chill on it and would be just right for summer cookouts, especially grilled meats.

Sourced from 40 to 60-year-old vines planted on steep slopes in multiple parcels in Ribeira Sacra, the grapes are fermented whole cluster in wood and aged in a mix of barrique, tonneau, and foudre for one year. The 2018 Camino Real features dark berry fruit and exotic spices that leap out on the nose over a silky palate with lifted acidity and restrained tannins and just a touch of earthy bite on the finish. There is plenty of depth here, with intense flavors in a wonderfully open knit bottle.  This would be equally great as a first introduction to Mencia as it would be for Galician die-hards. You may need a straw!
