Caprili's Winery in the Tavernelle Subzone in Montalcino's South

One of the great joys of wine is the thrill of discovering a wonderful producer for the first time. In this golden wine era, often these encounters come from delving into emerging regions, so it is easy to overlook a hidden jewel in an iconic zone. When we tasted Caprili's 2016 Brunello di Montalcino for the first time this spring, we immediately fell in love and felt the rush of excitement from a new discovery. It was captivating, memorable and had us hooked from the first glass.

Caprili is an old estate founded in 1965 when there were fewer than 20 properties in the zone and before the Brunello DOC was established. Near a hamlet called Tavernelle in southern Montalcino, the winery and vineyards are in a goldilocks zone that is extremely well suited to Sangiovese - low enough in elevation to have a warm microclimate but high enough to generally avoid frost damage or excessive heat. This is the same area that Gianfranco Soldera decided to purchase land in when he founded his legendary property Case Basse which is located directly south of the Caprili winery. Still in his 20’s, Giacomo Bartolommei is the 3rd generation to manage the property, and clearly, he makes good use of the family’s impressive holdings. The work here is cut from a traditional cloth with organic farming, native yeast fermentations in steel, and 3 years of ageing in large 30-60 hectoliter Slavonian botti. Despite the modest price tag, his 2016 Brunello has been one of our favorite wines of this outstanding vintage. And although it is priced like many of the more ambitious Rosso di Montalcinos, it delivers as a first flight Brunello.

After tasting this, a client recently texted “I feel like I’m getting away with something – I should probably buy more!” We understand the panicky feel as we bought as much as we could.  We encourage you to snag this impressive ’16 while we still have cases in stock.  You’ll enjoy having this one around.

Caprili - 2016 Brunello di Montalcino
24+ BOTTLES AVAILABLE
$49.99/BOTTLE
This is classically styled Brunello with soaring aromatics - pure red fruits and an earthy Tuscan feel, supported by ripe and slightly dusty tannins perfectly balanced by the wine’s natural acidity. The wine is extremely energetic and hard to resist right out of the bottle - it drinks wonderfully now but is also certain to age gracefully. Caprili stands out not only as a wonderful bottle of Brunello, but also as a real bargain in a zone where there are few to be found.
