We obsess over northern Rhône Syrah in all its iterations, from regal Hermitage to rakish Cornas to underdog Saint-Joseph. The region has so much delicious variety to offer from this noble grape, and each have their place at the table and in the best cellars. We are so excited to share a new discovery from just over the border in the Ardeche: Domaine Gallety. This property is based in the Cotes du Vivarais on the western bank of the Rhône River where the northern Rhône meets south. Within this humble appellation, Alain Gallety, now joined by his son David-Alexandre, have been nurturing grand ambitions of creating a top-tier Rhône wine that combines the power of the south with the finesse found in the north. They have farmed their land organically since the 1980s and have built a state-of-the-art, gravity fed winery so their grapes are handled as gently as possible before fermentation.  Their vineyards average 40-years-old with some Grenache plantings dating back to the 1930's, lending the wine extra depth and concentration that only old vines can offer.

Alain’s ambition has clearly paid dividends in this 2016 Cuvée Speciale bottling, a wine that floored us all when we first tasted it. Cuvée Speciale is a 50/50 blend of Syrah and Grenache that brilliantly displays earthy, berry fruit, and black pepper spice with hints of violets and garrigue. Silky and supple on the palate with bright acidity, it is perilously easy to drink! This is exactly the type of wine that we always say should find a home in any wine lover’s collection; a wine full of energy, that speaks clearly of origins and yet carries a modest price tag. An absolute joy to drink now, we expect this to thrive in the cellar and can't wait to see what it has to offer in 5-10 years, or more.

This has been one of our favorite wine discoveries this year, so we are offering a 10% discount on purchases of 6 bottles or more today through Thursday July 22nd.  Add 6 bottles or more to your cart and the discount will automatically apply.

 Tasting's are back!

The 2016 Cuvée Special made us fall in love with Domaine Gallety when we first tasted it a few months ago.  A 50/50 blend of Syrah and Grenache, it brilliantly displays earthy, berry fruit, and black pepper spice with hints of violets and garrigue. Silky and supple on the palate with bright acidity, it is perilously easy to drink.  A spot-on pairing for grilled dishes, whether burgers or mushrooms, serve this with a slight chill for a magic addition to summer cookouts.  This would also be a splended bottle to cellar in the range of 5-10 years, and is exactly the sort of wine we buy for our own collections. Fermented in cement for 20 days with daily pump-overs, aged in neutral barrels for 15 months.
