Miyagikyo is Nikka’s second distillery, built up in the mountains of Sendai for the purpose of making a whisky to contrast with the coastal distillery of Yoichi. The whiskies coming out of Miyagikyo use less peaty barley and the still is heated slowly using steam rather than direct fire. This leads to a much softer, fruitier whisky that displays notes of lychee, cardamom, and ginger. A gorgeous whisky that really leans in to the more gentle, aromatic side of what can be done with barley in the right hands.
