While long-aging sweet Tokaji Aszú is common, Géza uses the same technique for his dry Furmint and Hárslevelű wines. He believes dry Tokaji wines are terroir-driven and complex, and simply need time to reach their potential. And tasting the results, he’s clearly onto something. His wines are quite impressive. Géza Lenkey Sr. founded Lenkey Pincészet in 1999. Géza Jr. worked alongside Géza Sr. until 2007, when he took over the estate. They currently have 7 vineyards on 15 parcels in Mád and Bodrogkeresztúr, for a total of 10.4 hectares. Their soils have not seen pesticides or herbicides since at least 2005. The entire estate was certified organic in 2015. Géza starts pruning very early and performs two harvests each year - one in spring after budding, and one at the end of the summer. In the cellar, Géza is committed to low-intervention winemaking practices (spontaneous fermentation, no forced malo, no acid adjustments, low sulfur). This is not a single-vineyard wine. It is instead ‘a wine from a very difficult vintage. In 2014, 90% of our crop was damaged by various fungal diseases. These are selected Furmint and Hárslevelű bunches. Like a good documentary, this wine is complicated and meaningful.’ This was released in January 2022. It aged 46 months in barrel, and further 40 months in bottle. From a lot of 890 bottles.
