While long-aging sweet Tokaji Aszú is common, Géza uses the same technique for his dry Furmint and Hárslevelű wines. He believes dry Tokaji wines are terroir-driven and complex, and simply need time to reach their potential. And tasting the results, he’s clearly onto something. His wines are quite impressive. Géza Lenkey Sr. founded Lenkey Pincészet in 1999. Géza Jr. worked alongside Géza Sr. until 2007, when he took over the estate. They currently have 7 vineyards on 15 parcels in Mád and Bodrogkeresztúr, for a total of 10.4 hectares. Their soils have not seen pesticides or herbicides since at least 2005. The entire estate was certified organic in 2015. Géza starts pruning very early and performs two harvests each year - one in spring after budding, and one at the end of the summer. In the cellar, Géza is committed to low-intervention winemaking practices (spontaneous fermentation, no forced malo, no acid adjustments, low sulfur). Lenkey notes of this vineyard: “My utter favorite. In the beginning everyone suggested getting rid of it, saying it was next to a forest, and that the crop would be destroyed by game. Nobody ever praised its good attributes, and it does not belong to the trendy vineyards of Mád. Perhaps, for this very reason, it has become my favorite, and I keep insisting on the merits of Bomboly. It is situated on the southwest slope, its soil is abrasive rhyolite clay. It is 2 hectares with 4,139 vines. We produce excellent late harvest wine from Bomboly’s grapes.” This wine aged 3.5 years in Zemplén oak barrels, and another 2.5 years in bottle. From a 680 bottle lot. Lenkey likes pairing this with cod, apples, kohlrabi, and elderflower – sure sounds like Lenkey enjoys fine dining!
