The Marsanne brothers are an excellent source of unadorned, old-school Syrah at its best from St. Joseph. Back before it was fashionable, the Marsanne brothers propagated their own cuttings by hand from old vines in the 1970s and 1980s, at a time when their neighbors thought they were crazy. Resisting the allures of modern winemaking and viticulture typicallty yields dividends once a sufficient period of time has passed, and the Marsanne brothers' honest, old-school, admirably restrained, and pleasantly rustic wines have won many fans over the years. The 2016 is an delightfully lighter-weight Syrah with dark fruit aromas, cracked black pepper, and a dark, smoky earthiness characteristic of the Northern Rhône. Fruit comes from the southern sector of the Paradis, Montagnon, and Les Côtes (planted in the 1960s, 1990s) vineyards at Mauves, and the Côtes des Rivoires (1910, 1960s, mid-1990s) and Les Oliviers (1910, 1960s, 1975) at Tournon. Bottled unfined and unfiltered--the way a Northern Rhône red should be.
