Mas Foulaquier was created in 1998 by a Swiss engineer, Pierre Jequier, who dreamt of getting away from it all and working as a vigneron making wine as naturally and in as low-intervention of a fashion as possible.
Pierre set up shop at Mas Foulaquier in Pic St Loup, the northernmost of Languedoc appellations. Later, his wife Blandine Chauchet (also a winemaker) joined forces with him, and brought to the domaine an additional 3ha of 50+ year-old Grenache and Carignan vines in the lieu-dit of "Les Tonillières". Blandine similarly had a previous professional life as a parliamentary assistant in Paris; she was seduced by wine while tasting in the Assemblé Nationale's Wine Club, which later led her to harvest in Cairanne, prune in Muscadet, and finally study winemaking in Macon, before starting at Mas Foulaquier.
Les Tonillières acquired its name from a nearby forest that was previously used to source wood for barrels. Old vine Carignan and Grenache shine here, in this eminently ageworthy red wine that's earthy, leathery, supple, and spicy.
The St Guilhem-Le-Desert IGP is just north of Montpelier, near to the dry, garrigue-strewn decomposed limestone banks of the Herault River. It stretches to the north of Pic St Loup. The iconic Mas de Daumas Gassac has begun using the St Guilhem-Le-Desert IGP as well since the 2012 vintage (previously, it was sold as Vin de Pays d'Herault).
