Cabeças do Reguengo is a small project focused on pre-phylloxera vine material at high elevations in Portalegre, a town in eastern Alentejo, Portugal not far from the Spanish border. The "vineyards" are in fact polycultural orchards, which are farmed organically and biodynamically. The wines are made with minimal intervention yet leave the cellar utterly pristine in quality. This is a brilliant blend of white and red grapes from 100+ year-old, pre-phylloxera vines, hand-harvested and fermented in lagar before aging in concrete tanks. Here’s a denser, juicier wine than the pale Respiro wine. Mostly Trincadeira, with a universe of pre-phylloxera heirloom varieties alongside. Fermented in lagar, then aged in used Burgundy barrels for 21 months before bottling. It can age, but it’s already bringing joy: “The 2018 Solstício comes in at an even thirteen percent octane and delivers a deep and beautifully refined aromatic constellation of sweet dark berries, bitter chocolate, woodsmoke, chalky soil tones, Cuban cigar wrapper, a hint of saddle leather and just a touch of cedary oak. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, focused and complex, with a deep and sappy core of fruit, lovely mineral undertow and grip, ripe tannins and impeccable balance on the long, classy finish. This is a stunning young wine that will need a bit of cellaring time to soften up its fine-grained tannins. 2031-2080." – 94 points, John Gilman
