In an appellation like Chinon, flush with superlative Cabernet Franc producers, it takes a special vigneron to rise above the rest. We have no reservation placing Bernard Baudry as one of the most essential properties in the area. This fact is even more impressive considering Baudry is a relatively new Domaine in relation to his counterparts in Chinon. After studying viticulture in Beaune, he purchased two hectares in Chinon in 1975 and proceeded to make his mark by producing some of the most precise, delicious Cabernet Franc in the Loire. These days his talented son Matthieu has taken over, but Bernard is still intimately involved.
This bottling comes from Le Clos Guillot, a vineyard right on the precipice of the commercial epicenter of Chinon. The vines are young, all of them planted between 1993-2000 on a parcel of land that had been abandoned since World War 2. Black fruits, tobacco, and spice dominate the nose, while on the palate the wine is silky and exceptionally pretty. Considering the ripeness of the vintage, this wine is very young, and really starts to shine perhaps an hour or so after opening. The wine will blossom with some time in the cellar too if you're inclined to lay it down. Try some braised lamb alongside for a revelatory pairing.
