In 2012, Eric Morgat decided to combine different Savennieres terroirs into a single, unique wine, capable of expressing the many nuances of Savennieres in one majestic cuvee.
Eric leverages multiple sites : the Enclos vineyard (the first planted by Eric Morgat in1995) is marked by wind-swept soils atop partially decomposed schist; for the Clos Ferrard vineyard, schist soils are nearly exposed, underneath a mere foot of topsoil in a particularly dry, heated site. Finally, the tiny parcel Eric owns in La Roche aux Moines, just under 1 acre (=0.5 ha), is one of the Savennieres' very finest.
The harvest from each parcel is vinified and aged separately, in either 228, 400, or 500 L neutral oak barrels.
In order to render a more structured, complex wine, after each of these parcels has aged for 12 months in their respective barrels, the individual wines are assembled together in stainless steel and stoneware jars (amphorae), where they integrate for a further 10 months.
This is a wine that leaves no one indifferent. What a nose! There is something very regal in the intersection of an almost chalky, tidepool minerality, some fleeting wild herbal nuances, the pristine purity of fruit, and the elevage, which doesn't get in the way of the wine. A majestic tour de force for Eric, and a Chenin not to be missed.
