Winemaker Carmelo Pena Santana worked in Chile, Portugal’s Douro, and Ribeira Sacra in Spain before deciding to return to his native Gran Canaria in order to resurrect every fallow, noble, forgotten vineyard site he could find. As is the case with Envinate, Carmelo is seeking to work as naturally as possible, farming organically and biodynamically, and actively minimizing sulfur addition. Carmelo works with antique vines at particularly high altitudes, often working 1200m or higher. The wines arrive to us in painstakingly tiny quantities, and are some of the most exciting new wines we know of.
We’re convinced Canary Islands reds are the next big thing. The Ikewen is made from ungrafted, high-altitude Listan Negro and Listan Prieto vines aged 80-100 years old, with a bit of coplanted white varietals. This slightly olive-y, lively, peppery Listan Negro, vinified in stainless steel reminds us why we tirelessly search for new, lesser-known regions. 12.5% ABV, minimally sulfured. A discovery!
