“Claude Riffault is a shining star in Sancerre, producing suave, texturally intriguing, seemingly effortless wines… Every single cuvée, from its ‘entry-level’ Sancerre Blanc upwards, would happily sit in my glass.” -Rebecca Gibb MW, Vinous.
Based in Sury-en-Vaux, Domaine Claude Riffault is currently run by Claude’s young son Stéphane who took over in 2015. Stéphane studied in Burgundy under Olivier Leflaive and brings a terroir-driven sensibility to this estate. The estate has earned a reputation for taut, mineral, single-vineyard bottlings. Stéphane has further invested in the estate’s vines by hand-harvesting and converting to certified organic and biodynamic farming in 2017. Stéphane’s wife Benedicte leads the harvest team during an intense sorting process—again, as with Vacheron, another benchmark Sancerre rouge grower, only the finest grapes make it into the wines. This is a big part of how these wines can rival Burgundy!
The Sancerre Rouge ‘La Noue’ is from a 2.5ha plot of vines on Kimmeridgian limestone and marl. Seven different plots hold vines from 10-60 years of age and are vinified between 15 and 16 months in tank and old French demi-muids.
