The wines from Comando G are singular, noble wines that you could comfortably count among your most treasured bottles as they stand toe to toe with the world’s greatest wines. The Sierra de Gredos mountains, a few hours west of Madrid in central Spain, is an example of a remarkable, unique, old wine region that, thanks in large part to Fernando García and Daniel Landi (the two dedicated men behind the Comando G project), has found its way on to Michelin starred wine lists and boutique retailers’ shelves the world over. Inspired by top Burgundy and an unwavering reverence for Emanuel Reynaud’s work at the legendary Chateau Rayas, Garcia & Landi are now turning out some of the most sought-after wines in the country, and really, the world.
The Rozas 1er Cru is a blend of 6 different sites they feel go great together. This is wonderful mountain grenache that is reminiscent of Burgundy in its weightless quality – intensely aromatic fruit, deep minerality, and fine tannins. Hard to get your head around how something so light and effortless can pack so much punch and flavor intensity. Everything is farmed biodynamically, and it’s as if they’ve un-earthed the cheat code for grenache - figuring out ways to produce many different expressions from a relatively small geographic area (think Burgundy), each with their own nuance and beautiful thing to say. Each vineyard’s character is so clearly represented in these wines and really makes you appreciate how much grenache can be a conduit of terroir – finessed, elegant and ethereal from one site and brooding, feral, and darker fruited on another. Their pursuit of new expressions is what drives them to find the next great vineyard and bring it back to life. They’re on a quest to bring the Gredos to the forefront of Spain’s wine scene and are well on their way.
