The Alessandria family are to the northernmost Barolo vineyard of Verduno as the Mondavis are to Napa: founding, principal figures. There’s little doubt that Fabio Alessandria (of famed G. B. Burlotto) is the benchmark estate in the Verduno commune, but for those in the know, Fratelli Alessandria is the “insider/great value” address. Like so many well-made Baroli, these are bottles you’re tickled to own once they’re drinking. 2020 Barolo is a quite elegant, seductive vintage, and poised to drink younger. What 2020 forfeits in power and concentration, it gains in bright, red-fruited pleasure and exquisite balance. This bottling is intended to highlight the freshness of Verduno (a minimum of 85% of fruit must come from Verduno in order to put 'di Verduno' on the label). These are younger vines, around 30 years old, and planted between 750-100ft altitude. Spicy and fresh, with the distinctive floral notes you're expecting from Verduno.
