A new producer, imported by our dear friend Bryan who manages the Corkhoarder portfolio, a rapidly blossoming collection of delicious things that somehow feel destined to collectors and fine dining establishments. After working for Chapoutier and in various négociant roles, Hoppenot’s first solo vintage in 2018 was very well received; 2020 is a very impressive vintage indeed, and showcases this new grower’s determination and capacity to make his mark. Organically farmed and minimally sulfured, this wine hails from a steeply inclined monopole parcel in the Poncié vineyard. The regal texture of Fleurie is on display here, alongside an elegant, silken red raspberry fruit in this semi-carbonic macerated Beaujolais (pump-overs puncture the cap to prevent full carbonic). An exceptionally easy wine to drink, as it weighs in at a featherweight 12.5% ABV—many other Fleurie from 2020 reached north of 14.5%, and are quite different experiences.
