Jérôme Bretaudeau’s Muscadet had our attention early in the game. With critics and customers alike heaping praise on his wines, we’re seeing prices rise year over year. It has us wondering if it’s time to grab these before they reach unattainable status.
How it feels nice to write that while speaking of Muscadet! This once overlooked region has captured the world’s attention with refreshing, ageworthy, irrepressibly mineral wines. Melon de Bourgogne is now its very own chiseled, crystal palace of a wine, that has found its spiritual home in the granite contours of the Pays Nantais.
Jérôme Bretaudeau’s are some of the most textured Muscadet out there, capable of rivaling the palate weight of even Muscadet crus like the benchmark Pepière Clisson or Chateau Thébaud with their mandatory two (often three) years of lees aging. Jérôme is aging his wines on lees just as long as most Muscadet crus! Jérôme often chooses to harvest and bottle his wines not by vineyard site, but instead by vine age and terroir type – for example, he’ll bottle all his vines older than X years from, say, a gabbro or a granite site. He also systematically allows his wines to finish malolactic fermentation—somewhat rare in the region. This confers an additional roundness and texture to these incisive, mineral whites.
Jerome's Muscadet ‘Gaia - Cuvee Ovoide’ hails from a tiny 1.5 ha plot planted in the 1960s, atop volcanic gabbro soils. These certified organic, currently under biodynamic conversion wines ferment with indigenous yeast, then age 18 to 24 months in concrete egg-shaped tanks—hence the ‘Ovoide’ moniker. This wine finished malolactic fermentation, so it’s got a more round mouthfeel to temper the inherent mineral intensity. The finish is salty and citrus-laden with great acid cut.
