If you're a fan of Comando G, but feel dismayed as critical acclaim for the wines has driven prices up over the years, look no further than this wine!
Comando G winemakers Dani Landi and Fernando Garcia endeavored to rescue the Cooperativo del Cadalso, a co-op at the foot of the Sierra de Gredos, from utter financial ruin. Interest in the Sierra de Gredos has risen dramatically over the past decade, as it's a uniquely cool terroir capable of rendering wines that are a far cry from the hot, overwrought wines that Spain produced from so many famous regions for years (looking at you, Ribera del Duero, and Rioja in some instances). As is the case with so many vineyards in Spain (and Portugal, and even parts of the Mosel in Germany...), there is no end to the potential of historic, abandoned, fallow vineyard sites which need little more than a passionate group of people with sufficient time and financial means to invest in their rehabilitation. This co-op and its vineyards hadn't quite been abandoned, but teetered on insolvency before Landi and Garcia intervened. The villain in this story was a familiar one: real estate values, which pushed farmers to raze their vines and convert their vineyards to housing tracts, forfeiting a 75 year old tradition of viticulture in the region to cash in, call it quits, and allow Madrilenos an escape from the hustle and bustle of Madrid to go live in a mountain house for a weekend every now and again. 80% of the original vineyard sites have now disappeared.
Keen to stop this incursion into their beloved vineyard sites, and thankfully for us, Landi and Garcia were able to elevate the quality of both the farming and winemaking from this co-op to a new level, and allow a living wage for all farmers and actors in the co-op. The wines have received critical acclaim in keeping with the Comando G wines, but prices are laughably reasonable. The vines are now 20-70 years old, and the wine ferments and then ages 6 months in concrete. There's a lovely savory dimension to the spicy finish of this Garnacha that adorns the heft of the fruit. Recommended!
