Mont Damnes is arguably Sancerre’s greatest vineyard site – it’s a south-facing slope in Chavignol and the steepest vineyard in Sancerre. “The Damned Mountain” was the first to be planted with vines. Facing south it sees a ton of sun on its Kimmeridgian limestone soils (rich in fossilized marine life) creating ideal conditions for growing intensely concentrated, mineral Sauvignon Blanc grapes capable of producing world-class, age-worthy wines. Luc Prieur is the 11th generation to run this historic property! He is committed to organic viticulture and low-intervention winemaking – no herbicides, pesticides, nor synthetic fertilizers in the vineyard – he ferments with native yeasts in large wooden casks (very old-school style) and also raises the wines in neutral, used barrels. This allows the natural flavors of the grapes and the terroir to shine through. ’21 is a cooler vintage so expect brighter, crisper flavors with intense minerality and character.
