Ulli Stein has long been respected as one of the most dynamic winemakers in Germany, known for his irreverent fusion of the traditions of the Mosel with his own innate independent streak. He has spent most of his career working to save at-risk heritage vineyards in the region, especially those planted on their own roots without being grafted. His tireless efforts have proven that these steep slate vineyards planted with ungrafted vines can produce some of the most compelling Rieslings coming from the region today. ‘1900’ is one of two top parcel wines Ulli makes, arguably the top. It is from vines planted in 1900, only 1200 or so total, and stands as the second oldest producing vineyard in all of Germany. The parcel is in Alf, hence Alfer Hölle. It is more red slated, deeply concentrated and with incredible power.
