Domaine de Roilette has long been one of Beaujolais’ greatest domaines. They belong at that top echelon with names like Lapierre, Foillard, and Metras. Don’t confuse their Fleuries with the airy, delicate wines that exemplify this appellation; the ‘La Roilette’ vineyard was considered part of Moulin-a-Vent until 1920, and its soils, rich in clay and manganese, produce wines with remarkable power and sanguinous tang. These are some of the most complex and cellar-worthy expressions of Gamay you can find. Farming is sustainable, and vinification – always with indigenous yeast – is made in the traditional semi-carbonic style. The regular Fleurie is great for drinking on release. The August heat spike of 2023 affected young vines in the region, but Roilette has very old vines with very deep roots, and those clay soils are great for water retention. Even the straight Fleurie’s vines are an impressive 50 years of age.
